Gale Bay's great-grandfather, Ira Underhill Travis, was a Union soldier in 1861 when the state of Virginia seceded from the Union. He was in Col.Ellsworth's regiment which went to VA. to remove the Confederate flag hanging above the Marshall House Inn. Ellsworth was shot and killed as well as the innkeeper. The soldiers removed a piece of the flag and divided it - a piece is in possession of Gale Bay.
